Meaning of the Du’a:
This is a powerful supplication in which a person seeks Allah’s protection from two major emotional and psychological hardships: الهم (al-hamm) and الحزن (al-huzn).
الهم (Al-Hamm) – Worry, Anxiety, Distress
– Refers to future concerns that weigh heavily on the heart, such as fear of upcoming difficulties, financial stress, or unresolved problems.
– It is the mental burden that disturbs peace and causes overthinking.
الحزن (Al-Huzn) – Sorrow, Grief, Sadness
– Relates to past or present sadness, such as the pain of loss, regret, or emotional distress over something that has already happened.
– It is the heart’s lingering pain that affects one’s mood and well-being.
Why Seek Refuge from These Two?
– Both worry (هم) and sorrow (حزن) can weaken a person’s faith, productivity, and mental health.
– The Prophet ﷺ frequently sought protection from them, showing their significant impact on a believer’s life.
– By turning to Allah, a person acknowledges that only He can remove distress and replace sadness with relief.

This du’a is based on the Prophet’s ﷺ teachings, including a famous narration where he advised a companion to recite:
“اللهم إني أعوذ بك من الهم والحزن، والعجز والكسل، والجبن والبخل، وضلع الدين وغلبة الرجال”
(O Allah, I seek refuge in You from grief and sorrow, weakness and laziness, miserliness and cowardice, the burden of debt, and the oppression of men.) (Bukhari)
When to Recite It?
– During distress, sadness, or overwhelming anxiety.
– In morning/evening remembrances (adhkar) for daily protection.
– After prayers or in prostration (sujood).

“Whoever is mindful of Allah, He will make a way out for them (from every difficulty) and provide for them from sources they could never imagine.” (Quran 65:2-3)

Used when facing difficult decisions or an uncertain future to ward off despair and regain trust in Allah’s plan.
4. Daily Supplication (Dhikr):
Incorporated into regular prayers or morning/evening remembrances as a proactive shield against sorrow.

Recited by those struggling with mental or emotional distress to seek divine comfort and healing.
6. During Prayer (Dua):
Said in Sujood (prostration) or before concluding Salah as a personal plea for emotional well-being.
