Allahumma aj’alna min alladheena yuhibboona ‘ibadatak Meaning

Arabic Text:

اللهم ارزقنا الصدق في السر والعلن

Transliteration:

Allahumma aj’alna min alladheena yuhibboona ‘ibadatak

Translation:

O Allah, grant us sincerity in private and in public

Word Meaning:

This supplication asks Allah to bless the believer with *sidq* (truthfulness/sincerity) in both private and public matters. *”في السر”* (in secret) refers to one’s hidden intentions and actions when no one is watching, while *”في العلن”* (in public) pertains to outward behavior and speech in front of others.

Components of the Dua

1. **الصدق (Sidq – Truthfulness/Sincerity)**

– *Sidq* means complete honesty in speech, actions, and intentions. It includes:

– **Truthful Speech**: Avoiding lies, deceit, or exaggeration.

– **Sincere Actions**: Performing deeds purely for Allah’s sake, without showing off (*riya*).

– **Genuine Intentions**: Ensuring one’s heart aligns with outward actions.

2. **في السر والعلن (In Secret and in Public)**

– A true believer maintains consistency between their private and public life.

– In **secret**: They uphold sincerity when alone (e.g., in worship, thoughts, or decisions).

– In **public**: They remain truthful even under social pressure or temptation to compromise.

Why This Dua is Important

– **Strengthens Faith (Iman)**: Sincerity is a core quality of a righteous believer (Quran 33:35).

– **Protects from Hypocrisy**: Prevents the discrepancy between inner and outer behavior (a sign of *nifaq*).

– **Leads to Divine Acceptance**: Deeds are judged by intentions (Hadith, Bukhari & Muslim), so sincerity ensures Allah’s reward.

– **Builds Trust**: A truthful person earns respect in society.

When to Recite This Dua

– During personal supplications, especially after prayers.

– When seeking purification of the heart (*tazkiyat al-nafs*).

– In moments of temptation to hide the truth or act hypocritically.

Examples in Practice

– **In Secret**: Praying at night (*tahajjud*) without telling others.

– **In Public**: Speaking the truth even if it’s against oneself (Quran 4:135).

Conclusion

This dua is a plea for Allah’s help in achieving *ikhlas* (sincerity) in all aspects of life, ensuring one’s faith remains untainted by hypocrisy or dishonesty. By internalizing this prayer, a Muslim strives to embody the Prophetic example of truthfulness in every state.
