Word Meaning:
علم نافع (Beneficial Knowledge) refers to knowledge that is useful, beneficial, and brings about positive outcomes in both worldly and religious matters. In Islamic teachings, beneficial knowledge is highly emphasized, as it leads to personal growth, societal betterment, and spiritual elevation.
Characteristics of Beneficial Knowledge:
- Leads to Righteousness: It strengthens faith (إيمان), increases piety (تقوى), and encourages good deeds.
- Practical Application: It is not merely theoretical but can be applied in daily life to solve problems and improve conditions.
- Purifies the Soul: It helps in self-reformation, removing ignorance, and cultivating good manners (أخلاق حسنة).
- Benefits Others: It is shared selflessly to guide and uplift society.
- Approved by Sharia: It aligns with Quranic teachings and the Sunnah, avoiding false or harmful ideologies.
Examples of Beneficial Knowledge:
- Religious Knowledge: Tafsir (Quranic exegesis), Hadith, Fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence), Aqeedah (Islamic creed).
- Worldly Knowledge: Medicine, engineering, agriculture—if used ethically for humanity’s welfare.
- Moral Knowledge: Ethics, manners (آداب), and self-discipline.
How to Acquire Beneficial Knowledge:
- Sincere Intention (إخلاص): Seeking knowledge to please Allah, not for fame or argumentation.
- Learning from Qualified Scholars: Avoiding misinformation by studying under trustworthy teachers.
- Practicing What One Learns: Implementing knowledge in actions.
- Dua (Supplication): Asking Allah for beneficial knowledge and protection from useless knowledge.
Warning Against Useless Knowledge:
The Prophet (ﷺ) sought refuge in Allah from “knowledge that does not benefit” (علم لا ينفع). Useless knowledge includes:
- Information that leads to arrogance or harm.
- Excessive debates without benefit.
- Learning for worldly gains without regard for the Hereafter.
Conclusion:
Beneficial knowledge is a means of drawing closer to Allah, improving life, and leaving a positive legacy. Muslims are encouraged to seek it, act upon it, and teach it to others for the sake of Allah.
