Duas before eating

Naming Allah at the start of a meal is supported by Sahih al-Bukhari. A separate narration gives words for someone who remembers only after beginning, and the two occasions should not be confused.

Beginning a meal

Sahih al-Bukhari 5376 records instruction to a child about naming Allah and considerate eating. The general Bismillah card represents naming Allah; it is not a claim that the source quotes a long pre-meal script.

Teaching this with its meaning can make a familiar daily act more attentive. Keep ordinary meal etiquette and the specific transmitted wording clearly distinguished.

If you forgot at the beginning

Sunan Abi Dawud 3767 gives the longer naming expression for remembering after the start. The source card is labelled for that situation rather than presented as the default opening words for every meal.

An occasional lapse need not become an argument at the table. Learn the source-supported response and continue considerately.

Gratitude and sharing a meal

Pay attention to the people with whom you are eating, avoid waste and be mindful of dietary needs. These practical habits support a considerate meal without being an invented ritual sequence.

Do not pressure someone to eat unsafe food or ignore an allergy because a prayer has been recited. Food suitability is a separate matter from remembrance.

Common questions

Is the longer card always the first thing to say? Its report concerns forgetting and remembering during the meal. Is there another prayer afterward? Yes; the after-eating page gives a separate praise report. Must I repeat the words a set number? No such meal count is supplied here. Can children learn this? The Bukhari report itself includes teaching a child.
