Duas for a spouse and family

The family prayer asks for spouses and descendants who bring comfort through righteousness. Its meaning invites care for the household and attention to one’s own conduct, rather than control over another person.

English meaning

Our Lord, make our spouses and descendants a joy to our eyes, and make us an example for those who are mindful of You.

Reading the Quranic setting

Quran 25:74 appears within the description of Allah’s servants. Family comfort is linked with goodness and being an example to others.

That setting helps keep the prayer broader than a request for a partner to behave exactly as we want. The verse is not an instruction to impose a recitation count on a spouse or use religion to silence their concerns.

Making the request personal

Reflect on the needs of your household: mutual respect, wise decisions, support for children or patience with a difficult transition. A personal request can name those needs while remaining distinct from the quoted Quranic Arabic.

Different households have different circumstances. The prayer should not be used to shame a couple without children, a bereaved person or someone living apart from family.

Conduct alongside supplication

Choose one action consistent with the request: listen carefully, fulfil a promise or seek a fair conversation. Where disagreements persist, use trustworthy support rather than assuming the other person simply needs a special formula.

Safety comes first where there is coercion or abuse. Asking for family goodness does not mean remaining without help in a dangerous situation.

Common questions

Is this only a wedding prayer? Its meaning extends to continuing family life. Can it make someone love me? No such control is promised. Must the whole family recite it together daily? The verse establishes no mandatory household sequence. Which page complements it? The marriage and children pages address those particular relationships.
